If You Want Your Children To Be Creative Don’t Send Them To School

May 7th, 2007

OK, I admit this might not be the best bit of advice in the world BUT . . . there is an element of truth in it. If you don’t believe me see what Sir Ken Robinson has to say on the matter - he was after all knighted by the Queen in 2003 for services to education, culture and the arts.

I discovered this video on a great blogpost called Do Schools Kill Our Creativity?

Ken shares some thoughts:

Picasso once said:

All children are born artists, the problem is remaining an artist as we grow up.

It’s so important that you allow your children to be the most amazing, creative, little rascals that they clearly have the potential to be.

Let Ken Inspire You To Think Differently

Human creativity is a truly remarkable thing that never ceases to amaze.

Sir Ken Robinson does get a very true point across. It is a same that our heads of schools and our goverenments do not hear him and take heed to what he is pointnig out. Creative in kids and all people is a lost if they are not incouraged to follow their dreams and their hearts in life. Yes, Math, Reading and the rest of schooling is needed. But do we keep our Kids back from the Arts? YES we do… Your work is very good, so keep up the good work you do. I am 64 now and I do know the loss of the Arts, such as Music for I wanted to learn music and my schools and folks stoped me from it. As a adult and tied up in the pace of life I never got back to learn music. But I still listen to it and love it. I do tell people to help their kids go after the dreams that their kids want to encourage the kids as much as they can. Life is long - YES - and it is short when you look back. Go for your HEARTS desires.

  2. TERRY JAMES Says:

The realization of intelligence being diverse, dynamic and distinct is being spread through our schools but it has to compete with the academic pressure imposed by our examination systems.Working in a large mixed comprehensive school the challenges of following this philosophy are immense together with the behavioural habits some miscreants bring to the table.Optimism and perseverance are essential with the resilience and the motivation to bounce back when faced with disruptive behaviour.Time, tolerance and a belief in the potential of every child and your own ability to make a difference are essential.

What ken says is so true. I’m a firm believer that our educational system is not working for many people, and that we’re being put in a mold that kills our creativity. More power to you Ken. We really need folks like you to speak up since your voice comes out loud and clear.

I am a teacher and very dissatisfied with our education system. I absolutely loved watching this video. I am going to suggest to my parents that they watch it also.

Thank you so very much for making it available.

    Indigo (Crystalline) children

More and more of these weird children are being born. They share the following common features: Extraordinary organization of dna, immunity to AIDS and other emerging diseases, extreme intelligence and self confidence, extra sensory perception, and paranormal abilities. Somehow we are communicating to the next generation through our semen and ova that there is trouble ahead and the kids are making the appropriate adjustments. They are the next evolutionary generation of our race. The phenomenon has been documented in China and the United States. (BTW: These kids are hard to parent and are often “diagnosed” with A.D.D. or other invented disorders and “treated” with ritalin.) (sept 2000 report)

This may also be a natural compensation effect from a decadent industrial society trying to make humanity one sided.

Ken……….WELL SAID ! As an educator and counselor of many years I observe this:
Parents who try to control their children by punishment is such that it not
only muzzles creativity but turns it into destructive and hostile behavior.
So, in a sense, children’s cretivity is never destroyed, only altered.

  14. Jean Beauford Says:

“Our current EDUCATION SYSTEMS worldwide are making children lose this capacity to be creative.” When will it be time for parents, a child’s primary cargiver and educator, to step up and be held accountable for THEIR role in how THEIR children turn out. Academic pressure and social discipline (citizen education) usually stems from family and government values. As for educators and educational philosophy, read Terry James’ comment AGAIN!

So refreshing to hear someone voicing the on going thoughts that i have been having about education since the late 80’s. Having been in teaching & training , with-in the Birmingham area in the UK, mostly with YTS ( the lost souls of our normal education system in the UK )Who responded, given attention and a different sort of teaching, mostly practical and hands on. Who in 2 years on the course developed & grew in to well rounded human beings, leaving behind the stigma of” no hope’ers ” proving that they can learn, given the right environment and encouragement.
There is a wonderful documentary of a group of youngsters, from the inner city of Birmingham’s roughest tower blocks areas, being coached by a director from the Royal Shakespeare theatre in Stratified on Avon( his name escapes me unfortunately) During the long summer holidays he encouraged this group to produce Romeo and juliet; using their homes as the back drop. It was film for TV, it was ABSOLUTLY WONDERFUL, which proved beyond doubt that given the right encouragement right teaching and stimulation plus the key to learning found, the best can be brought out in anyone; brought tears of delight to my eyes and a warm glow to my heart.
I so welcomed the speakers comment’s. We don’t all learn the same way; sad that its taken 25 years to be recognised, but better late then never? A most enjoyable and amusing talk. Thank you !
